Helping Seniors Manage Diabetes with Confidence

As we age, the effects of diabetes can become more serious, increasing the risk of complications like heart disease, vision problems, nerve damage, and slower healing. That’s why consistent, careful diabetes management is essential for senior health and safety.

At Delmar Gardens, our skilled nursing team provides the daily support seniors need to manage diabetes, including blood sugar monitoring, medication administration, nutrition planning, and routine health checks. By keeping diabetes under control, we help residents feel their best and reduce the risk of complications—all in a supportive, caring environment they can trust.

How We Support Seniors with Diabetes

At Delmar Gardens, we understand that senior diabetes management is an important part of daily life for many of our residents. Our skilled nursing staff provides thoughtful, hands-on support to help seniors stay healthy, safe, and independent while managing their condition.

Daily Blood Sugar Monitoring

We perform routine glucose checks throughout the day, using up-to-date monitoring tools to keep blood sugar levels within a safe range. Our nursing staff tracks results closely, noting trends and responding quickly to any concerns.

Medication Management

Whether a resident takes insulin, oral medications, or a combination of both, our geriatric pharmacists ensure that every dose is administered accurately and on time. We also monitor for side effects/allergies and collaborate with physicians to make any necessary adjustments.

Nutrition Counseling & Education

Our culinary team works closely with dietitians to prepare delicious, well-balanced meals that support blood sugar control. We take into account individual dietary needs and preferences, including carbohydrate intake, portion sizes, and meal timing.

Ongoing Health Assessments

We conduct regular assessments to check for health complications like poor circulation, foot ulcers, nerve damage, or vision changes. Our team coordinates care with doctors and specialists as needed, ensuring early intervention and personalized treatment plans to support whole-body health.

Diabetes Friendly Meal Plans

At Delmar Gardens, we understand that managing diabetes for seniors starts with the right nutrition. That’s why our culinary team collaborates closely with registered dietitians to craft meals that are not only nutritious but also enjoyable. Every dish is thoughtfully prepared to support stable blood sugar levels, with careful attention to carbohydrate content, portion control, and meal timing.

We also know that food is personal—so we take the time to understand each resident’s individual dietary needs, cultural preferences, and personal tastes. Whether it’s adjusting a menu item, offering heart-healthy options, or creating low-sugar alternatives, our team is committed to making mealtimes both satisfying and safe. With every bite, our goal is to help residents feel their best while enjoying the comfort of well-balanced, flavorful meals.

From Humble Beginnings to Skilled Care Leaders

Skilled Nursing Care is the hallmark of the Delmar Gardens Family. Our late founders Barbara and Henry Grossberg, with their sons George and Gabe, provided care to elderly friends and neighbors out of their modest, University City, Missouri apartment. As popularity of their kindness grew, so did the need for space.

The Grossberg family met the Goldberg family in the early sixties and together in 1965, the first Delmar Gardens skilled nursing and rehabilitation opened. Today, the Grossberg and Goldberg families proudly continue exclusive ownership and operations of Delmar Gardens, ensuring family first…always.
