Philosophy of Care

The Hospice philosophy is based upon caring for the patient and family who are experiencing a terminal illness. Emphasis is placed on improving the quality of life through symptom management, pain control and compassionate support in the comfort of the patient’s home or nursing home. The purpose of Hospice care is to enable patients to live as fully and comfortably as possible by ministering to their physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, as well as to those needs of their loved ones. Hospice always affirms life, and neither hastens nor postpones death.

The Hospice Team

Hospice care is not provided by one person alone. St. Joseph Villa Hospice utilizes a team of highly qualified professionals from many disciplines and experienced Hospice volunteers. All team members specialize in easing the physical, emotional and spiritual pain that often accompanies a life-threatening illness.

The members of the Hospice team consist of:

  • physician of the patient’s choice
  • registered nurses
  • social worker
  • spiritual caregiver
  • grief counselor
  • home health aide
  • medical director
  • volunteer
  • physical, occupational or speech therapists
